Which chips can I leave on the cartridge after post test?

Many laser printer cartridges now carry an attached Electrically Erasable Programmable Read Only Memory (EEPROM) Tag, or ‘chip,’ as it is known in the industry. Information, such as the printer’s identification, will be recorded onto the chip which, in many cases, will “marry” the cartridge to the printer. If it is taken out of that printer, even though it has only printed very few pages, it will not be recognized in another printer. This creates a problem because many want to post test their cartridges after reassembly. Of the many models of monochrome Hewlett Packard (HP) laser printers, there are only a few that could initially marry the chip to that printer. These include the HP P1005, P1006, 1505, and M1522. These should always use a dedicated post-test chip to out-bound test the cartridge. A new chip should be installed before shipping to the customer. The HP color cartridges are a different story. Among these, only a few will allow post testing without marriage. These include the HP 1500, 2500, 2550, 2820, 2840, 4600, 4650, 5500, and 5550. All the rest will need to have a separate out-bound chip for post testing. Do not allow the same chip used in the test to go out to the customer, as it will not be recognized in another printer. In the Samsung family, the ML5000 carries a fuse, so it too should not be in the post- tested cartridge, but the ML 2250, ML 3050 and corresponding Dell’s will be fine. The Lexmark monochrome Optra’s, E-series and T-Series will be okay to leave after post test, but it’s important that you print fewer than 20 pages. The best rule of thumb is DO NOT outbound test using the chip that will remain on the cartridge for color cartridges.
